Description

Dental clinic offering orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Preventive care is a foundation of dentistry. We firmly believe in taking a preventive approach to dental care. Promoting health through preventive and routine hygiene is at the heart of our practice. These visits allow us to monitor your health and detect potential problems from the beginning.

Did you know that Americans are becoming less likely to visit the dentist as they age? Data from the Centers for Disease Control reports that only 57 percent of Americans over the age of 65 visited the dentist in 2010. This compares to 61 percent of adults under the age of 65 and 79 percent of children age 2 to 17. However, it is important to visit your dentist for cleanings and exams, regardless of how long it has elapsed since your most recent dental appointment.

Holistic Dentistry

What is it and what is its usefulness?

Holistic dentistry is one that views at the mouth and teeth as a reflection of the entire individual. With it you can relate the state of the oral cavity to the rest of the body, habits and even the emotions of the patient. It is often a misunderstood concept and associated with alternative medicine, although seen in detail it is interesting.

In fact, many diseases and health disorders develop symptoms in the oral cavity and vice versa. That's where the experience and knowledge of a holistic dentist comes into play, who will be able to relate to each other and require the tests that are necessary to rule out, diagnose or treat a health problem.

The relationship between oral and general health.

Dentistry today magazine says there is a link between diseases such as the following and oral health:

Diabetes

People with this disease are more likely to have gum problems, as the body becomes less resistant to infections.

Kidney diseases

When the kidneys don't work well, substances that can affect bad breath, dry mouth or notice an unpleasant taste in the mouth are released.

Heart disease

Studies claim that a periodontal problem increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart conditions or strokes.

Anxiety

It affects the immune system, reducing defenses against infections. It is also related to bruxism, as stress causes that habit of unconsciously squeezing or grinding teeth. Other interpretations of holistic dentistry Some holistic dentists go a little further and relate each type of tooth to a disorder or feeling. For example, large incisors would indicate internal fears and nightmares, irregular canines would externalize cravings for something or cavities in the lower premolars, or higher molars could be a concern, need for fun, or disappointment. In these cases it must be given more benefit from the doubt, since the "emotional meaning" of the teeth has not been proven for sure.

There are also other holistic dentists who propose to decrease the use of metals to repair teeth, such as cavities, crowns or sleeves. Instead, they understand that it is better to use fiberglass or carbon. In conclusion, holistic dentistry is a very interesting concept and that dental clinics should know, since many patients are interested in it and, well applied, can be very useful. However, you don't have to believe everything that's said about it and you always have to contrast the information and use common sense.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution for restoring lost teeth. They are made of biocompatible medical grade titanium. The implant is left to heal and fully integrate into the bone over the next few months. after this healing period, it becomes part of the bone. Once the bone is scarred around the implant, a dental implant crown can be attached to the implant with the help of a pillar. Dental implant crowns look and feel identical to natural teeth.

Whether patients lack a single tooth or need a complete smile change, Costa Rica Smile Designers offers a wide variety of treatment options to ensure that every patient who needs dental implants gets a beautiful, individualized smile.

TYPES OF RESTORATION

Individual implants

For patients who lack one or few teeth in the mouth, dental implants may be placed to restore individual teeth that can feel and function like their natural teeth.

Bridges

When a patient is missing multiple teeth, another option besides restoring each individual tooth with a single implant is to place fewer implants and connect the implant crowns to a bridge and use the two or more anchors to replace multiple teeth firmly in place.

All in four implants or teeth in one day is for patients who do not have teeth or have defective and infected teeth (and may currently use some kind of dentures). Since the temporary bridge is fixed, patients have no dentures on the day of surgery.

Dental implant restoration requires extensive knowledge of cosmetic dentistry and biomechanics in order to select the best material and obtain predictable results that ensure long-term treatment success and provide a natural-looking result.

On all implant crowns are classified into two categories:

  • Retained cement: When a titanium part (pillar) is screwed, the implant is used to act similarly to the natural tooth and a crown is placed on top.
  • Retained screw: when the crown is screwed directly to the implant body deciding on what is the best solution is a balance between function and aesthetics; it is essential that the type of restoration is designed for each case. Same-day dental implants in Costa Rica.

Traditional dental implants can take up to six months or longer to bind to your jaw and heal after implant surgery. With the use of new material came a new method in implantology called "same-day dental implants". This highly specialized technique allows certain patients to remove their damaged teeth and implants, along with full dental crowns or restorations, on the same day. This way, patients don't have to leave the office toothless, giving our patients more comfort, more confidence, especially when it comes to frontal dental implants. We make sure to consider all the factors and offer the most natural looking and individual design restorations designed for all our implant restorations.

More facts:

  • Patients usually leave a dental implant procedure with temporary teeth in place. This is markedly different from the past, when patients were asked to run out of replacement teeth until the implant had attached to the bone.
  • The success rate of dental implants is quite high; it is about 100 percent in certain areas of the mouth.
  • While it's hard to tell precisely how long dental implants usually last, with regular brushing, dentist visits, etc., they're likely to last as long as you do!
  • Dental implant procedures can be performed under local anesthesia, although sedation options are available for patients with anxiety and discomfort concerns.
  • A procedure to add a single implant will usually take about an hour. Naturally, more implants will take longer.
  • Healing times may be decreasing. Until recently, dental professionals were instructed not to start working on a patient's permanent prosthetic teeth until three months after surgery for the lower jaw and six months for the upper jaw. Today, however, we know that the healing and bonding process may go faster for some patients.
  • While dental implant failures occur in very rare cases, they are usually only a problem with smokers and people with weakened immune systems or uncontrolled diabetes. In these cases, they can usually be replaced with larger implants.
Anti-Aging Dentistry and Smile Design

No matter your age, your smile is the first impression others have of you, it's one --third of the face, and let's be honest, who looks at your forehead? You can practically say it's half the face! Then it makes sense to want her to be bright, white and healthy. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, more than 99 percent of all American adults believe a smile is an important asset for social situations. Perhaps that's why many patients choose cosmetic dental procedures to improve their smiles and increase self-confidence.

Did you know?

That Dr. Bonilla and his team are also able and trained to transform the shape, color and alignment of your smile, as well as to fill gaps and discreetly restore decayed or damaged teeth with tooth-colored fillings, also to redesign the shape and color of your mind, the smile design also includes surgeries or alternative techniques such as botulinum toxin (botox) to correct incorrect positions on the lip cause discomfort in the patient. In fact, modern advances in cosmetic dentistry have made it possible for patients to achieve near-perfect teeth with cosmetic enhancements and restorations that are virtually undetectable for friends, family and colleagues.

What is anti-aging dentistry?

As we age, our faces change and sometimes our teeth influence our appearance. If your teeth have had some difficult days and your teeth are stained or yellow or if your lips have been thinned by aging and miss your fuller lips, anti-aging dentistry can make all the difference.

How can anti-aging dentistry improve your self-confidence?

As we age, changes in our body and appearance can be daunting. While we may have gained confidence in many areas, such as our professional and personal relationships, our confidence in how we look may have changed.

Confidence in our appearance and happiness with our appearance is a key factor in the satisfaction of many people with themselves. It's one of the reasons why many people go through plastic surgery. Remembering your youth and how you used to look and how your face has changed can be detrimental to your confidence.

Why should I get anti-aging dentistry?

When people see you, one of the first things they'll notice is your face and if you smile or laugh, they'll definitely notice your teeth. Your teeth shouldn't be something you're ashamed of or feel scared of. Anti-aging dentistry is all about providing your teeth with the treatment you need to have a beautiful youthful smile once again.

Endodontics (Root Canal)

Endodontics are valuable dental procedures used to treat and preserve teeth with infected roots. The pulp is the living portion of the tooth that extends to the root and contains nerve endings and tissues. When infected, patients may experience pain, swelling and even total tooth loss unless treated.

Endodontics remove damaged parts of the infected tooth and root. In some cases, an antibiotic is prescribed to help prevent further infection inside the tooth. The remaining organic part of the tooth can be restored using a cap or crown that provides a natural appearance and normal dental function.

Many patients associate root canals with pain and discomfort.

But local anesthetics and advances in modern dentistry have made root canal treatments highly tolerable and often no less comfortable than getting a standard filling. Once completed, a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment will eventually be restored with a crown that will completely mimic the anatomy and aesthetics of the regular tooth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I a candidate for a root canal?

You may be a candidate for root canal treatment if decomposition or damage has allowed bacteria to infect the pulp inside your tooth. A root canal treatment might also be the right treatment for you if you prefer to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible rather than extract the healthy and sick parts of your tooth. For more information about the essentials and whether they are right for you, schedule a dental exam and consultation as soon as possible.

What should I expect during my root canal treatment?

If you decide to undergo root canal treatment, the first step of your procedure will involve a local anesthetic. Once the root of your tooth is numb, the diseased part of your tooth pulp will be removed and potentially treated for bacterial infection. The tooth will be sealed and filled before being restored with a crown.

What type of post-treatment care is required after a root canal treatment? It is normal for teeth to inflate after root canal treatment, which can cause tenderness within the first few days after treatment. However, normal brushing and flossing habits can be resumed immediately after treatment and restoration is complete.

Dental Extractions

Dental extractions are routine dental procedures used to remove decayed, damaged, or problematic teeth. Dentists usually make every effort to preserve natural teeth, although sometimes an extraction is necessary. Although the procedure is done in a dentist's office, it is considered surgery.

Depending on which teeth are removed, they can be replaced with a dental implant or other oral prosthesis.

There are several reasons why you might need a tooth extraction. The most common cause of tooth extractions is severe cavities and cavities. However, many patients also undergo extractions for impacted teeth, particularly wisdom teeth. Other causes for extraction include advanced periodontal disease, cracked teeth, and teeth with severe malformations. Although many circumstances that require removal are unavoidable, some could be avoided with regular visits to the dentist for exams and cleanings.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a tooth extraction?

Only your dentist can tell you if you need a tooth extraction. However, you may be a candidate for the procedure if one or more of your teeth break down so severely that a filling or other restoration is not a possibility of treatment.

What should I expect during my dental extraction appointment?

If you and Dr. Bonilla decide to remove one or more teeth, your return will be scheduled for oral surgery at a later date. You will be given a local anesthetic to prevent pain during the procedure and may be prescribed medications to help manage pain in the hours after removal. Depending on the nature of its extraction and other factors, antibiotic intake will be evaluated.

What kind of post-treatment care will I need to follow?

Postoperative care after tooth extraction is essential for healing and preventing complications. You will be instructed to avoid certain foods and also keep the surgical site clean at all times. If you are prescribed an antibiotic, it is important that you complete the course of treatment to prevent infection. Finally, you may be advised to avoid smoking or drinking through a straw, as it can delay the healing process and cause a condition known as "dry alveolitis."

Dentistry Sedation

Have you been afraid to call a dentist, even if you know it's time to clean it and/or need dental care? Do you feel anxious or afraid to go to a dental office to avoid it? Are you suffering now, but can't bear the thought of dental treatment? Do you want to feel relaxed, safe and comfortable every time you visit the dentist? Would you prefer complex dental treatment or surgery to be performed in a single visit without pain? If so, you will be pleased to know that sedation dentistry is the answer to your concerns.

Did you know?

Dr. Bonilla is able to provide three different types of sedation dentistry? You can opt for managed sedation in one of the following ways:

• Oral sedation

A pharmacological agent administered prior to treatment to relieve anxiety and help patients relax.

• Inhalation sedation

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide offers a euphoric sensation that makes dental treatments more enjoyable.

• Intravenous sedation

This is a deeper conscious sedation reserved for patients who wish to remember very little or no of their dental appointments.

All of these types of sedation dentistry provide the same benefit: they allow you to get the dental treatment you need, without fear or discomfort.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I choose sedation dentistry?

Only you and Dr. Bonilla can determine if sedation is right for you. Because sedation covers a spectrum of treatments, you should consult with Dr. Bonilla to discuss which level of sedation best suits your needs. Your eligibility for sedation will depend on your age, health status, and any other medications you are taking.

What should I expect if I am sedated for my dental procedure?

That depends on the type of sedation you experience. Oral sedation is relatively simple and involves taking a prescription drug here at the office about an hour before starting the procedure. You will feel more relaxed, but fully aware of your surroundings during treatment. If you choose nitrous oxide, you will be instructed to inhale the gas at the beginning of your appointment. Additional nitrogen may be given during the procedure to keep it in a state of euphoria. At the end of your treatment, you will be given oxygen to help you "get out" of your sedated state.

If IV sedation is right for you, you will be told to avoid food and drink the night before your treatment. You will be given an intravenous sedative before your procedure, causing it to fall into a deeper conscious sedated state. Dr. Bonilla will supervise you throughout the procedure with the anesthesiologist.

Is there any precaution I need?

Depending on the type of sedation you undergo, a licensed driver may need to take you home after your dentist appointment. If you undergo IV sedation, you may need to be supervised for several hours after the procedure.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Dental extractions are routine dental procedures used to remove decayed, damaged, or problematic teeth. Dentists usually make every effort to preserve natural teeth, although sometimes an extraction is necessary. Although the procedure is done in a dentist's office, it is considered surgery.

Depending on which teeth are removed, they can be replaced with a dental implant or other oral prosthesis.

Clear Correct

Supports are the standard for orthodontic correction, but few adults want to use a metal bite for a year or more, while teeth move in better alignment. Clear Correct solves this problem by offering a discreet alternative to metal reinforcements. With Clear Correct treatment, there are no brackets or cables. Instead, you'll receive a custom series of transparent aligners that you'll use for at least 22 hours a day. Aligners will gradually straighten teeth over the course of several months or years until you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Did you know?

That orthodontic treatments can be successful for patients of all ages? Due to advances in subtle orthodontics, adults are starting to account for nearly half of all orthodontic patients in the U.S. Transparent alignment trays are almost invisible and so discreet that they have no effect on your everyday interactions. Although each patient is different, most adults can use Clear Correct aligners for one or two years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I a candidate for Clear Correct?

To find out if you are a Clear Correct candidate, you must first schedule a consultation with Dr. Bonilla. Together, they can analyze the status of their teeth and discuss their personal cosmetic goals.

What should I expect during my Clear Correct treatment?

If Clear Correct is right for you, your treatment will begin with impressions and images of your teeth. These images and prints will be used by Clear Correct to produce a prescriptive set of custom aligners designed to slowly move teeth in alignment. You will use those aligners at all times, except when you are eating, brushing or flossing. Although you won't need to visit us to adjust your braces, it will be recorded from time to time to monitor progress.

Will I have to follow special instructions following the cord removal procedure?

Once your treatment is complete, you will no longer use Clear Correct aligners, but you will likely require a retainer. Retainers are removable oral devices designed to help retain the new position of your teeth and prevent them from return to their previous position.
